Combos should answer a fight problem

A Gakuran combo is useful only if it solves a real problem: starting pressure, punishing a whiff, keeping someone cornered, or converting a mistake into a downed-state chance. If you copy a long string before understanding why it works, you will drop it the first time the opponent blocks or sidesteps.

Build combos in short layers

Starter

Your starter is the first hit or movement that creates contact. It should be safe enough that missing does not lose the entire fight. Practice your starter until you know its range and recovery.

Confirm

The confirm is the moment you know the starter connected. If the hit lands, continue. If it is blocked or whiffs, exit. This one habit separates controlled pressure from button mashing.

Extension

Only extend when the opponent is actually caught. If the target is drifting out, blocking, or another player is approaching, cut the combo short and reset.

Reset

A reset uses movement, weave, or spacing to start the next decision. It is not a surrender. It keeps you from feeding a punish after your strongest pressure ends.

How to use weaving better

Weaving is strongest when it changes the opponent’s timing. Use it after they commit, not before they have shown their attack. If you weave too early, they can simply watch you move and hit the landing or recovery.

Good weave habits:

  • weave away from the line of attack;
  • keep the camera on the target;
  • avoid weaving into walls or crowds;
  • return with a short starter, not a full panic string;
  • stop using the same direction every exchange.

Crowd fights are different

In crowded school fights, long combos are risky because another player can interrupt the sequence. Short confirms, quick repositioning, and camera discipline matter more than a perfect one-on-one combo route.

Practice route

Spend one session practicing only this pattern: starter, confirm, two-hit extension, reset. Once that feels stable, add one style-specific option. Gakuran rewards players who can choose pressure, not just players who know more buttons.
